Brian Mai, biology teacher at Gateway, asked a simple question. The answer he received turned into a lesson. He asked his question to Dr. Steve Larson (Gateway class of '78). Dr. Larson spoke to students about careers in medicine during Career Day. Dr. Larson is associate professor of emergency medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Mai asked what he should tell students reluctant to pursue a career in medicine or any other profession that required many years of education. Dr. Larson's answer was short: "Tell them it is like climbing a mountain."
Mr. Mai decided to show all his students the displayed image and asked them to write down how the image related to achieving a career goal. He purposely used a picture with mountains of different sizes and slopes together with varying environments such as the ocean an forests to add creativity to the responses. By the student feedback, it was well received.
